The Forgotten Adventures of Jake Tarr

Let me tell you a story. Okay, it’s been a few years since we’ve gone camping. Sleeping on the ground isn’t really my thing. I like beds and showers and free breakfast that is already ready already. So, when I was cleaning out the garage a few weeks ago – and people stopped their cars as they passed to shop through my stuff – Steve and I sold the air mattress & tent among other things. Later that day, we watched ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ with our son Jake.

After seeing the movie, Jake decides he needs more adventure in his life, he says we never do anything noteworthy or mentionable. He wants to go to cool places and hike and climb rocks…

What? I reminded him of all the places we’ve been and all the things we’ve done, as specifically as I could. Fishing in Cresent Lake – a beautiful glacier fed lake in northern Washington; camping in Three Rivers; hiking in the Redwood’s; taking a ferry boat ride to Victoria Island in Canada; horseback riding on Catalina Island; he rode a bike on a tight rope at the LA Science museum; whale watching in Long Beach Ca; Sledding in the High Desert after a snow; Touring Alcatraz and the Winchester Mystery House; Rock Climbing in the Joshua Tree National Monument; Off-roading in Sedona, AZ; Snow Boarding and fishing in Big Bear; Snorkeling – touring the USS Missouri – Submarine ride in Hawaii; Snorkeling – parasailing – jet skiing in Cabo; probably more cool stuff that I can’t think of right now… (here’s some pictorial proof, in case Jake actually comes across this someday when he Googles his own name)

Jakes forgotten adventures

Guess what he says. Go ahead, make a guess. He says he doesn’t remember those things! Adventures in four states and three countries – forgotten.

Yeah, so we risked our personal safety and camped last weekend in bear country. I had to get all new gear and buy bear spray! We set up camp, hiked, shot the compound bow, fished (caught nine fish between us), kayaked, cooked over an open flame (including the fish), got sunburned and came home early. All in a 24 hour period of time. Speed camping at it’s finest.

The moral of my story is this: If you’re planning trips while your kid is little, get a babysitter and leave the kid at home. He won’t remember anyway.

Time for some wine 🙂

lindemans chard 2

2012 Lindeman’s Early Harvest Chardonnay $2.99

Elsewhere price $6.99

I thought this Chardonnay was very fruity. Larry said it was nice; it’s got some body to it. I noticed he had a second glass. Brian commented that it was sweeter than he expected.

Tasting notes: Crisp and refreshing, Lindeman’s Early Harvest Crisp Chardonnay is at least 25% lighter in alcohol and calories compared to Bin range. Bright straw in colour with youthful green hues, this wine displays an attractive array of tropical fruit flavours with subtle spicy notes. The palate shows ripe melon & stone fruits with a creamy mid palate leading to a fresh finish.

light grape white blend

The Light Grape 2012 California White Blend $1.99

Elsewhere price $10.99

Terry thought this white blend was smooth. Scott liked it as a nice summer wine. Larry thought it tasted like a couple ice cubes melted in it, but it was enjoyable. Misty liked the pairing with pineapple and I thought it would make a nice sangria. Connie said it was very good and Arvin said he liked it; it had a little bite – well maybe a nibble.

Winemakers notes: Light color of yellow with elegant green tint. Fresh fruit flavors with hints of honeysuckle & citrus. The palate is bright with flavors of citrus with hints of honeysuckle. Finishing with a crisp clean minerality and lemon zest. This refreshing wine is a blend of Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Chenin Blanc, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

santerra white wine

2009 Santerra Sonoma County White Table Wine $3.99

Elsewhere price $19.99

Arvin commented that this white blend was dry; he noted that it is ready to drink now and would pair well with chicken. Brian, who doesn’t really like dry wine, said he had to take the last of his fast like a shot of tequila. Scott said it was dry, but not bitter – smooth.

4 out of 5 on Snooth.com: pear, vanilla, rose petals…on the nose…full bodied with a slightly sweet, crisp finish…

light grape red blend

The Light Grape 2011 California Red Blend $1.99

Elsewhere price $10.99

Arvin found this red blend to be dry as well. Terry said it was dry, but good and Misty agreed that she liked it. I expected it to be lighter like the others from this brand; it’s a pretty good table wine. It would pair well with many different dinners.

Winemakers notes: Soft and rich, with flavors of cherry, dark chocolate & blackberries. The palate is plush and plentiful, backed by supple tannins and hints of creamy cocoa and sweet oak on the finish. This enticing blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Syrah, Merlot, Tannat, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Because of its broad appeal our Red Blend is the perfect go-to table wine. The silky texture and medium body make it versatile, and the juicy fruit and bright acidity complement fish (especially salmon), meat, poultry, and anything grilled.

patassy-pinotnoir

2010 Patassy Vineyard Pinot Noir $6.99

Elsewhere price $24.99

Arvin immediately commented that this wine has finesse’. It’s really good and it has legs! You could just sit around and take in the aroma all night. Larry also thought it had a nice bouquet, another excellent red! (yeah, he’s been converted to the red side). This is a wine you buy by the case.

Check out this link for the story behind this Pinot and why it’s being sold at such a great deal!

Expert tasting notes from KLwines.com:

Old-school Russian River Pinot here – lots of blackberry and cherry fruit in the nose, with deeper, earthy undertones. The palate is broad, fruity, and supple, echoing on the palate ripe red and mixed berry flavors, with just a touch of spice to keep things interesting. Medium-bodied, with medium acidity and soft tannins, this is juicy, accessible Pinot with a lot to offer for under $20

This is easily the best value in a CA Pinot that I have ever had. The Patassy father/son team clearly know what they are doing, and I suspect their future vintages, if they can be found, won’t be sub-$20. Kudos to K&L for finding this gem. Extremely flavorful, but not too big. An approachable, fruity and slightly tannic Pinot. Makes me believe that CA can make a really good Burgundy after all…

Confessions of a reluctant work-a-holic

Immediately following our five year anniversary event, Steve & I had planned on visiting some family out of town. If you’ve ever worked retail you know – the first half of the month is not a time to take a few days off. Never-the-less, we we’re pretty optimistic about going. We worked 12-15 hours a day with no days off for two weeks leading up to this trip. Still, I was not ready. I tried to send Steve without me… nope. not-ga-doit. He talked me into going. All my workstress was tied up in my neck making it impossible to finish the mindless paperwork that was demanding my attention. So, I packed up my work, and we left really late for a seven hour drive.

I started to relax. It only took about three hours of mostly silent driving, watching along the side of the road. I like to get glimpses of other people’s lives out my window as we pass by farms and small towns. I do enjoy finding beauty in the scenery no matter where we go. We started up through the Tehachapi’s as the sun started to go down. I love the scattered oak trees across the rolling hills.

May 2008 040

And, we came down the other side into the desert as the sun was setting when I remembered… I love the desert night.

desert road

Speeding down the dark desert highway, my favorite playlist blaring from the speakers. I roll down the window so I can feel the cool wind in my hair, a million stars all around. The lyrics from almost all of the Eagle’s songs are played out here. I got a peaceful easy feeling. Then, in the distance – civilization. Dotted lights across the horizon. We’re home. That’s an upside to living in so many different places over the years, it always feels like home when you go back to visit.

golf course

That was pretty much the highlight of the trip for me, lol. I had to work most of the time there and we left early, but it was nice to see the family and Steve golfed the best game of his life. A week later, I’m almost caught up from being gone. It was still worth it. Next on the agenda: Front Porch Wine Tasting!

Fortress Sauv Blanc ~ OM Chard ~ Roblar Syrah ~ Olin Cab

**********

fortress sauv blanc

2010 Fortress Sauvignon Blanc $4.99

Elsewhere price $14.99

Arvin started us off saying this Sauvignon Blanc has a stout aroma. Larry tasted a mixture of sweet and sour in the first sip and Steve tasted citrus. Terry said it’s tingling her throat and feels warm. Connie said it’s unusual and commented that she liked the taste of orange with a splash of arsenic. Becky noticed that the first sip wasn’t the greatest, but the second and third were really good. So, skip the first sip if you can (and take out the 13th floor in every building, please).

Winemaker’s Notes: The Musque clone produces a Sauvignon Blanc reminiscent of a fine white Graves. This wine is crisp and clean with bright acidity and notes of kiwi, honeydew melon, and ocean brine. It is an excellent wine for pairing with cheese.

Critical Acclaim: “Fortress is piling up quite an impressive record for good Sauvignon Blanc at a fair price. Their 2008, which is unoaked, combines crisp acidity and extreme dryness with complex flavors of lemons, grapefruits and gooseberries. Sommeliers should scoop this one up.”

On-line review:  Delicious!  With aromas of cocoa and anise, the wine opens with flavors of raisin, black currant, and blueberries.  Those notes are followed by black pepper and sandalwood.  The wine has nice structure and smooth tannins.  We enjoyed it so much, we went ahead and ordered more!

He said, “Very good”. Joe commented on how much he liked the aroma and said it was perfectly aged. After his first sip, “Wow! Really good”.

On-line review: An interesting and divisive cab. This showed a great deal of flavorful fruit, yet had a strong green pepper element as well.

crazy legs

2011 Crazy Legs Old Vine Zin

 Robert Lauchland Vineyards Lodi, Ca.

Arvin got this bottle, from a customer that owns a small local winery, as a tip! So, even though I don’t know where you can get it, or how much it costs… here’s our review:

Steve liked it, he said it was dry but smooth. Arvin also thought it was dry. Connie said it’s got legs and Becky says she’s going to Lodi to find some Crazy Legs!

From the bottle: Crazy Legs describes the bold characteristics of this wine as it streaks down the sides of a wine glass. We are old, small lot, winemakers working to sustain the unique regional character of Lodi wines. Our family has been growing winegrapes for over 100 years in the premier Lodi Appellation, which is famous for its soils, Sierra Mountain water, and cooler Delta Climate.

Get with it man, the red blend is almost gone!

How to turn a shed into a table and a chimney into a flower bed. I love anything FREE. I mean, come on, who doesn’t. Right? Re-using or repurposing is hip nowadays. So, get with it man and create something amazing!

Arvin dropped off some used bricks from an old chimney that he had removed. They are from the 1930s! They now line my walkway making it wider and I even got a nice little flower bed along the house. So sweet and so EASY.

Angove Sauv Blanc

2009 Angove Vineyard Select Sauvignon Blanc $4.99

Elsewhere $16.99

Larry liked the aroma of this Sauvignon Blanc, he thought it was citrus or apple. Terry commented, “Oh, tastes good. Nice summertime wine – a little sweet with a little bite. It didn’t bite me until I paired it with food.” Karey (my visiting cousin 🙂 thought it was on the dryer side and Connie said it was spicy, but good.

On-line review: An ideal wine for the warm summer months, perfectly suited as an aperitif or with freshly shucked oysters & grilled salmon.

Tasting Notes: Bright pale white and green, this wine shows all the hallmarks of its region with blackcurrant leaf and freshly cut grass and a touch of aromatic passion fruit evident on the nose. The palate is vibrant and fresh with tropical fruit and citrus leaving the wine refreshing and long on the finish.

2011 Cellar No. 8 Chardonnay $3.99

Elsewhere $9.99

Becky noticed the aroma right away, she said it was buttery like walnuts and tasted smooth. Larry agreed, very smooth and the oak was not overbearing. Connie described it as creamy.

On-line tasting notes: This Chardonnay shows characteristics of tropical and citrus fruit flavors and lemon, pineapple and sweet white peach. These flavors continue on a lush, juicy palate dominated by clean citrus flavors. Some aging in French oak gives the wine additional depth of flavor and a creamy, refreshing mouth feel.

Arvin said he’s enjoying the legs – nice. Larry said “when you sip it – you feel it”. Terry thought it would be great with Italian food, especially red sauce. Arvin paired it with dark chocolate as well and commented that it made it taste like chocolate covered cherries. Steve agreed, saying that chocolate did the job and Larry said it brings it all together. Upon tasting this wine Connie declared wine tasting over. “No more tasting for me, only drinking!” she confiscated the bottle.

This Cab has a very nice garnet color. Karey thought this was also dry and Larry agreed, very dry. Steve liked this at first taste. He said this is his favorite of the night.

5 out of 5 stars from Vinexus Web Shop for Wine Lovers

Tasting notes: This Cabernet Sauvignon is complex with various layers of spice and flavors. On the nose you will find enticing aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and vanilla with evident spice from the oak and a hint of herbs. Tasting delivers a multi-layered wine with texture of ripe blackberry, mocha, toffee and vanilla. Medium firm tannins provide structure and balance to this medium bodied Cabernet, which will continue to evolve in the bottle.

Procrastination

I have to admit, I am a procrastinator. Yep, the queen of putting things off. My house is full of small unfinished projects that quietly wait for me to get a-round-tuit. Silently mocking me. This week they haven’t been so quiet. Steve to the rescue! He went in to work for me, leaving me in an empty house –no kids – no distractions – it was GLORIOUS! An empty house is completely therapeutic sometimes.

As soon as they left I made my list and raced to complete it all before they returned. That is a fun game. I painted the patio tables to match the new cushions, painted the kitchen & bathroom baseboards that Jake installed months ago, touched up some spots on the kitchen cabinets, hung curtains in the loft & bedroom, patched & painted the trim on the stairs where the dog ate it (two years ago, when she was a puppy) cleaned my bedroom and washed & put away ALL the laundry. When all the laundry is clean and put away, it really makes me feel like I have my whole life together.

AND finally ***FINALLY*** I painted the front doors! I had been putting that off for months. It was super easy. I mean palm-to-the-forehead-easy! I cannot believe I waited so long to do this. I love it. And Steve? His excitement could barely be contained…. As he walked up to the house he said, “oh, we’re those people now?” Yep. We are. You’re welcome.

Online review from my Good Friends at ‘The magical world of wines from Grocery Outlet’ had this to say: This full-flavored wine is dominated by juicy acid of lime / green apple, but also shows Pinot Grigio’s pear and straw.  It’s pleasantly crisp with a little minerality, and very tasty overall.

Two Whistles on the Legs!

Last Thursday, I was stuck in bumper to bumper traffic downtown (Yosemite & Main) when I saw the wind take the hat off a guy. The hat swooped up into the air; it then came back down right towards a jogger who caught it as he ran. He didn’t even change his stride, and handed the hat back to the first guy. Now, I have to live the rest of my life knowing that I’ll never be as cool as that guy.

But, I always have Front Porch Wine Tasting!

On-line review from Westchester Wine Warehouse:

There’s a phenomenal equilibrium to this unconventional white. Bridging the gap between a fresh, crisp Californian Sauvignon Blanc, and the tropical elements typical to the New Zealand variety, this wine emits notes of kiwi, gooseberry, and hints of ripe starfruit. Following through a medium-bodied profile, suggestions of lime zest and meringue bring focus to this leaner entry, that finishes with a brevity seldom found at this price range. Brisk and beautiful, this is one that is not to be missed. (Wine Director: 91 Points)

Winemaker’s notes: “The correct canopy balance in the vineyard ensures that the berries develop the sweet blackberry dried cherry and cassis character while allowing for notes of tobacco tea and even a hint of forest floor to come through. American oak provides a touch of vanilla clove and baking spices. The finish is long and lingering. This wine should pair well with meat dishes grilled vegetables as well as many cheeses.”

Controlling my inner Control Freak

By the time Wednesday came along I had already had it with this week and was soooo ready for Front Porch Wine Tasting. Steve and I went to a business meeting in Reno on Monday. Always nice to change things up a bit, get out of town & take a nice peaceful drive through the mountains. Except … my inner control freak ruins the lovely drive every time. I can’t even describe the torture of driving while sitting in the passenger seat. (Terry says that’s a Freudian slip, lol) Steve is a perfectly capable driver. But, as the drive goes on I notice that I’m gripping the door handle and gasping when the traffic slows. I wonder if Steve may not always being paying close enough attention to the road. I force myself to keep quiet and stare out the side window instead of watch where we’re going while I try (and fail) to not think about every worst case scenario possible. I notice every fail in the railing system that exists to stop cars from falling off the mountain roads, every distracted driver that threatens all the cars on the road and I consider all the things that could go wrong with my car mechanically. I feel myself tensing up as I re-live it even in story-telling mode. Whew! Deep cleansing breath. Well, if the ride up wasn’t bad enough, that storm that hit Tuesday night on our way back as we went through Donner Pass (of all places!) made this the most treacherous drive I have ever experienced. So far.

If you don’t have any control issues, you may not understand the anxiety that arises in a situation like this. Or, you may be a control freak and not even know it! Does any of this apply to you?:

  • You make lists for everything in your life
  • You can’t stand it when you’re in a car but not driving
  • Your vacations tend to be structured and active
  • You don’t like people touching your stuff
  • You think it’s easier to do things yourself, rather than trusting someone else to do it
  • You leave off all unflattering items from the list that describe control freaks

Take this personality quiz from blogthings.com  to check how much of a control freak you really are. My results: 48%, not as bad as I thought. “Generally, you are in control but not a control freak. Your life is usually in order. However, sometimes you get too obsessed with making everything in your life picture perfect.”

Bring on the wine! Sometimes it’s the only way to control your inner control freak 🙂

On-line review: Deep straw with a light pink gray cast. Peaches and lime yogurt with a light underlayment of earth. Easy entry and mid-palate with a taut finish. Pleasant with nice table friendly acidity

barking sheep chardonnay

2008 Barking Sheep Chardonnay $4.99

Elsewhere price $12.99

Larry liked the color and he tasted grapefruit. Terry said it looks fresh and she either likes a wine or doesn’t – & she likes this one. Becky thought it would go well with chicken or fish Arvin said it’s got a bite to it.

Winemaker’s notes: Barking Sheep Chardonnay; explosive, fruity without being sweet, pippin apples and a bit of peach, stylish with herb dishes, salmon and chicken.

chill out malbec

Chill Out Malbec $2.99

Elsewhere price $6.99

Joe liked the earthiness and Becky commented that it started sweet and fruity. Larry and I both liked it. Becky and Steve agreed that it became dryer with the second taste. Paired well with the Pepper Boursin Cheese and crackers.

From the bottle: Our medium to full bodied Malbec has notes of berries and plum, with rich tannins and a lush finish. A satisfying red wine from the first sip. Pair it with beef carnitas, coconut curry, vegetables or simply as you chill out and unwind.

zinman

2010 Perry Creek Zinman Reserve Zinfandel $8.99

Elsewhere price $23.99

92 points on Cellartracker.com

Becky immediately commented this smells GOOD. Arvin and Joe agreed that that is their favorite smell –the Zin Grape. They said it tasted dry and rich and Arvin liked the afterglow. Joe thought the label reminded him of that Blair Witch movie. Steve liked this from sip #1. We finished this bottle.

On-line review: First impression is bold and pleasing. This wine goes well with fillet and Cabernet reduction. On the nose there is dark raspberry, licorice, and hickory. On the palate, there is stone fruit, fennel, spice, with a nice juicy balanced finish. This is a very nice example of a balanced Zinfandel. This is an enjoyable wine.

What Inspires You?

Outdoor dining season is here! I’ve literally been working on fixing up my backyard for two years. It’s really kinda close to being done about halfway done…

Instead of taking advantage of the great weather the past couple weeks and finishing the landscaping, I stayed true to form and started a new project in the backyard that could also be left almost completed (for now). It’s a really simple design, my son Jake built the skeleton (in record breaking slow motion). He used stainless steel deck plates that we happened to have laying around for the counter tops. Then I used fence boards to finish it. The unfinished part is the shade. Stainless steel will definitely need to be in the shade before summer, it’s already really shiny. So, a gazebo (from my favorite Bargain Market, perhaps) may be in order…

outdoor kitchen 1     outdoor kitchen 2

Welcome to the outdoor kitchen

I don’t know if it could actually be classified as a ‘Kitchen’. It has no electricity for a mini fridge (yet) and there’s no sink or running water – even though I have mentally ran water lines every possible route from the source to the new kitchen. Every route is completely complicated. So, maybe it’s more like an outdoor food prep/bar. But it’s enough. And, it inspired me to move Front Porch Wine Tasting to the back porch!

And, in turn, drinking on the back porch inspired me to add a couple of Fancy Craft Beers to the tasting menu

Quimera craft beers

Quimera Premium Craft Beer from Chile

750 ml Amber Ale or Imperial Stout $3.19

Elsewhere price $11.99

We tried the Stout first, it is very dark with brown foam. Smelled kind of sweet and tasted of burnt caramel. I don’t usually like dark beers, but I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I would. Arvin tasted cocoa and Connie tasted coffee. Steve definitely liked it. He said it tasted like good clean dirt. I have no idea what that means.

On-line review: This Chilean Impy Stout pours pitch black with an off-white head that lingers. Intense malty aroma with notes of burnt sugars, molasses, dark chocolate, cigar smoke, tar and ashes. Taste is sweet with an ashy hint, not overly complex but with good development in the mouth and thoroughly enjoyable. Body is big with a dense texture. Almost viscous and chewy. The 8.2% alcohol is well disguised. A well-made strong stout.

I really enjoyed the Amber Ale. It had a nice creamy colored foam, you have to be careful when you pour or you’ll get way too much of it. Everyone liked this one. It was an easy drinking beer. Steve commented that he would enjoy this beer during a Packer win or even a loss.

On-line review: Poured a very pleasant amber color with minimal head. Nose was nearly pure malt and this followed through in the mouth. A very nice beer.

Eco Love Riesling ~ Blue Fish Riesling ~ Washington Hills Syrah ~ Lady in Red Cabernet

For some reason I was inspired to experiment a little with the food. I came across a recipe for Swordfish Skewers with salsa verde. They were easy to make and I found the swordfish right here at Manteca Grocery Outlet. So convenient.

Turns out, I love Swordfish! (2lb $9.99 in the freezer dept)

2011 Blue Fish Sweet Riesling $2.99

This beautiful blue bottle of Sweet Riesling from Germany was refreshing. Larry tasted peaches and nectarines and thought it was excellent. Terry said she really liked it, that it was clean and crisp tasting. Connie also enjoyed it, saying it was very summery. I definitely will be getting a case of this wine. Of course I enjoyed drinking it, but I plan to make a nice chandelier from the bottles to hang in the outdoor kitchen. Thermodynamics (from middle school science class) is my new best friend.

eco love riesling

2009 Eco Love Riesling $3.99

This sustainably grown Riesling is from the South Island of New Zealand and also comes in a really pretty bottle! We found this wine to be refreshingly crisp and fruity. Perfectly paired with the grilled Lemon Pepper Shrimp Kabobs as recommended by the on-line reviewer at yumsugar.com below.

On-line review: But I was equally taken by their Riesling’s layers of fruit: peach skins and petrol on the nose to start, followed by a puckery citrus and green apple palate, then a gooseberry finish.

washington hills syrah

2011 Washington Hills Syrah $5.99

Elsewhere price $11.99

You know I love me some Syrah! Terry commented that it is very smooth and Larry said Hoorah for the Syrah. Steve thought it was sweet for a Syrah. Connie noted that it is full bodied and she noticed a spiceiness. I asked Arvin how he liked it and he said, “Well, it’s gone”. I think that means he likes it. We all did. The whole bottle was gone. Lol.

On-line review from Snooth.com: Lots of blueberries and blackberries. Very calm, slightly sweet but very delicious. I like this a lot!

Arvin started us off on this Cab. He said it has a full noise and is sexy! Every other comment that was made was either inappropriate for this blog or I was completely distracted and didn’t write it down. The on-line review is spot on:

5 of 5 stars from TotalWine.com: Aromas of blueberry jam, cherry, red currant, blackberry and elderberry. These are balanced by tea, tobacco, cedar, spice and vanilla which develop in the glass and on your palate leading to a nice, lingering finish.

Share your Bargain Junque

I’m always looking for a bargain. That’s what Grocery Outlet is all about and that’s what I’m all about. The treasure hunt for a great deal is all part of a fun game that can be played alone or with others. I feed my family on bargains and I decorate my home with found treasures. I love to decorate and I love bargains!

My entire existence consists of one spontaneous obsession after concurrent with another. Like shiny objects that distract my attention way too easily. I guess the lack of forethought to recognize that a project will become amazingly-frustrating- to-the-point-where-I-wished-I’d-never-started-it is part of my personality disorder. It also includes, among other things, I-forget-how-old-I-am  and  I-don’t-have-to-leave-yet-there’s-plenty-of-time-to-get-there. I do not always love these things about me. I do love the idea of finished projects, but I want to hurry through the work part (i.e. painting walls) so I can get to the fun part (staging/decorating).

I’ve been hoarding art for the past couple of weeks. I thought it would be fun to have a gallery wall in the loft. Of course, the loft had to be painted first. I didn’t even consider the fact that I have come to hate painting walls before I got started. AND before I was even done – I wasn’t sure I liked the color :/ Repaint? Nope.

On to the fun part: Staging and decorating the room. Now, just for informational purposes, the term ‘found treasures’ is not equal to any old cheap junk. Found treasures are equal to one-of-a-kind pieces that are found at bargain prices = Junque! I like to stalk the clearance racks, thrift stores, craigslist and occasionally I even strike gold at curbside shopping. Last week I followed a Salvation Army truck through town and was rewarded with this:

mad men cabinet

Behind that $17 copper side table, that’s a 1962 record player/real to real/stereo cabinet that works! The same one that was in Don Draper’s office in the first season of Mad Men. I picked that up for $50, fresh off the truck.

And this little rolling portable bar?

portable bar

$15. Yeah, that happened. (Five bucks for the table runner from Target’s clearance rack)

I’m sure this post will only add to my competition on craigslist, but that’s cool. We’re kinda like family now. Families share. I would love it if you shared some of your great Junque finds in the comments for me to see…  Here’s the gallery wall:

gallery wall

(sorry bout the pour lighting :-/ )

Inside the open closet (behind Don Draper’s stereo) in the loft still needs paint, but I finished the fun part so I moved on.  I was kinda hoping I could trick one of my kids into finishing the painting for me… I’ll let you know how that works out.

Aja White Table Wine ~ Rocland Chardonnay ~ Ass Kisser Grenache ~ Rock Wall Zin

Aja wine

Aja White Table Wine $2.99

Elsewhere Price $8.99

We tried this white with spicy Asian food like the label suggested. Steve and Becky both thought it was better without the food. They thought it should be enjoyed during the summer by the pool. Kari disagreed, she said the food gave it texture. This was Kerri’s favorite of the night.

From the bottle: Aja (pronounced Asia) is all about the food. The 2010 vintage is a delicious Australian Pinot Gris blend specially created to perfectly match the spicy fragrant flavours of Asian food. With zesty, aromatic, luscious fruit flavours upfront, to balance the heat of chilli and other spices, and a crisp citrus finish to cleanse the palate.

Tasting notes: Colour: Pale green straw. Nose: Aromas of pineapple, passion fruit, musk and white peach. Palate: A medium bodied and zesty white wine with intense flavours of passion fruit and white peach. Natural fruit sugars give luscious lingering flavours of guava which are structured by zesty citrus acid giving a crisp elegant aftertaste.

The esteemed wine critic Winsor Dobbin wrote: “There’s plenty of appealing upfront fruit and some nice crisp juiciness on the finish that suggests this low-acid number will, indeed, partner well with a variety of Asian spices.”

Rocland chardonnay

2012 Petite Rocland Chardonnay $2.99

Elsewhere price $10.99

Larry thought this Chardonnay had a nice nose and Terry & Becky agreed, they said it was light and had a fruity aroma. Terry said it was on the sweeter side. Becky tasted oranges and peach. Steve and Larry both tasted pear. Kerri thought it would be good in a white sangria and Arvin liked it as well. We all agreed that it grows on you.

From the winemaker: Green & Gold highlighted colour with a vibrant sheen. An inviting fruit driven nose exhibiting white stone fruits and floral esters. Crisp citrus flavours married in with mouth watering peach and nectarine

ass kisser wine

2009 Royal Ass Kisser Grenache $2.99

Elsewhere $11.99

Well now, that’s a fun name! Terry commented that the nose is soft and the taste is soft. Soft like Arvin’s silk shirt from Hawaii. Scott and Joe liked it at the first taste, as did I. The second taste was even better, lol. I liked it with the dark chocolates and berries. This was Connie’s favorite.

On line review: This delicious Grenache is no joke, and our tasting panel was very impressed; this wine delivers great value.

Wine Spectator 88 points: Light and silky, bright on balance, this features lively raspberry and Earl Grey tea flavors that linger easily. Drink now.

Rock Wall wines

2012 Rock Wall Zinfandel $12.99

Elsewhere price $25.00

Last week we tried the Rock Wall Petite Sirah and loved it! Kerri thought this was a subtle Zin with a mild palate. She was also quoted as saying, ‘And I love me some Zin!’ Larry noted that it had a mild nose, Scott liked it and Joe said it was plumy. Scott, Terry, Larry and me all picked this as our favorite of the night. Joe Liked the wine, but really wanted more pizza.

Cellar Tracker 88.1 points: Decant for a hour. Upon opening, was pretty closed, vegetal and tight. After an hour, the wine drank smoother and the berry notes jumped out. Spicy with good tannins, ripe cherries, and good earth tones. Kind of a muted nose of black raspberry and dark currants. Also some hints of spice. In the mouth a decent balance with cherries ruling into a medium finish.

Cheers to blue teeth!

Planting flowers in the front yard makes me happy. Wait. I don’t mean the actual act of planting the flowers makes me happy. Because it does not. Not at all.

Maybe if I could effortlessly dig holes in fluffy dirt and plop the new plants in, but that is not how it works. My flower bed is full of tree roots. Big tree roots that grow right where my new flowering shrubs belong. Every year I try to plant in the same place, not remembering the roots are there. Then I usually give up and plant them somewhere else which makes the freakishly large flower bed look unfinished. This year I dug holes and cut right through any roots that got in my way. Take that tree roots! It’s a stupid looking tree anyway. If I accidentally killed it, no worries, I’ll plant an apple tree in it’s place next year 🙂

flower bed

(please excuse my thumb)

This year I also finally chose the proper plants. Evergreen, flowering and drought tolerant.

***fingers crossed***

that I won’t have to try to fill the whole giant flower bed anymore. Just the border. Which I’m okay with. I can handle border planting, that’s where all the nice fluffy dirt is.

Now, every day when I pull up the drive way, the flowers make me smile. It’s like a little glimpse of Spring. (Thanks for being there during my silly rant).

What else makes me happy? Wine.

I’ve learned that it only takes a small glass of wine to transition from stressed to happy. But, that rarely stops me…

reynoso-family-vineyards-sauvignon-blanc-alexander-valley-usa-10369771

2009 Reynoso Sauvignon Blanc $6.99

Elsewhere price $12.99

Larry commented on the citrus/pear aroma being refreshing. Steve said it had a spicy finish, but he was eating spicy pasta snacks at the time :-/ Joe tasted peach; he said it was very light and not too strong.

On line review: The fruit character of this wine speaks of citrus with riper, tropical notes as well. In the mouth, the acidity has a softer profile than many Sauvignon and the fruit is freshly expressed.

on line review 2:

Suggested Setting Freshly-cooked lobsters   on the beach
Signature Scent Key Lime Blossom

She’s not shy in the least, an intensely flavored and layered Sauvignon Blanc that delivers tons of citrus and passion fruit with hints of tarragon and white pepper. Not quite as crisp or dry as some of her Sauv counterparts she’s still refreshing and pairs best with seafood. Next time you have sushi skip the sake and go Sauv instead.

On line review: It was on sale for $8.70 (Regular Price: $12.99). Smooth, dry and fresh – loved it! Not agree with 88 pts. Five out of Five stars.

Winemakers notes: 88 PTS WILFRED WONG. Impressive and delicious, the juicy ’08 Sonoma Landing is a beautiful wine; fresh with finely ripened, core fruit flavors; dry yet easy in the finish.

Steve commented that he really liked this one and Larry & Terry agreed, saying it was very berry and really good. We all had seconds and we finished the bottle.

On line tasting notes from Williams-Sonoma: Rich mulberry and blue plum flavors form the core, surrounded by notes of spice, vanilla and seared meat. $35.00

~Rock Hollow Sauv Blanc ~ Heritage Ranch Chard ~

~Valentine Cab ~ Emma Pearl Merlot ~ Chianti Classico~

**********

Rock Hollow Sauv Blanc

2010 Rock Hollow Sauvignon Blanc $8.99

elsewhere price $22.99

Larry started us off by announcing that he has really started liking Sauvignon Blanc (he usually prefers Chardonnay) He says It’s much lighter than most Chards. I thought I tasted crisp. Steve and Larry both tasted melon. Steve commented that it was very tasty and Larry said he really liked it.

86 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine: Nicely crisp in acidity, this has a minerally scour that cleans the mouth. The pineapple, lime and guava flavors are strong, and the finish seems just a little sweet

90 points from Cellar Tracker: Excellent QPR

 **********

Heritage Ranch Chardonnay

2010 Heritage Ranch Chardonnay $4.99

elsewhere price $9.99

Terry noticed that this Chardonnay started sweet and Steve pointed out that it had a buttery finish. Larry tasted vanilla. I thought it would have more of an oakyness, but was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t. An enjoyable Chardonnay. Wow, we are really getting the hang of this!

84 points from Tastings.com: Pale golden color. Aromas of vanilla salt water taffy and dried pineapple with a dryish light-to-medium body and a pencil shaving and floral bath talc accented finish

 **********

Valentine Cab

2000 Valentine Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon $6.99

elsewhere price $24.99

I tried this Cab as I was getting ready for wine tasting. I was a little worried about it’s age, not sure if it held up over the years, lol. I didn’t even let it breath, and I immediately liked it even though it had a touch of oak and was on the dry-er side. Later, Terry thought it was bold and Larry really tasted the tannins.

92 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine: Bright yet plush, with black cherry, currant, sage, herb, spice, licorice, blackberry, chocolate, toast and smoke flavors all neatly layered for complexity. Firm, solid, ripe tannins add good structure. Finishes long and lush.

93 points from Wine & Spirits magazine: Long and sleek, this dramatic mountain cabernet has a reservoir of flavor at its dense core, a lovely fruit richness that keeps giving with overtones of the underbrush in a pine forest by the sea.

Emma Pearl

2010 Emma Pearl Merlot $4.99

elsewhere price $19.99

I was excited to try this Merlot, the label was so pretty. Tiffany blue. Very elegant. I also, tried this one ahead of time and I think it may have ruined all the other wines for me. I liked it that much. But, I powered forward and tried them all anyway. Terry commented on the smoky-ness and Steve tasted the spicy finish. Larry liked the tart red cherry that he tasted and I really enjoyed how smooth it was.

89 points from New Hampshire Wine-man: In the glass, the color appears slightly more ruby than pomegranate and is quite clear, but is crowned with only a thin clear rim. Mildly aromatic, the nose is a sweet red cherry, light cinnamon and cedar, with just a whiff of alcohol (14.5%). Good acidity and mild tannin are carried by its medium body and a “normally” smooth and textured Merlot. Flavors of  tart red cherry, plum, with hints of smoke and alcohol trail long into a spicy finish. I was pleasantly surprised by this Merlot, and I would certainly recommend it, but the caveat is that great spice on the finish: some may prefer less of it.

 **********

chianti

2007 Chianti Classico $6.99

elsewhere price $21.99

Chianti is Arvin’s favorite, but we had to try this one in his absence as he and Connie were on vacation this week. We missed you guys, hope you thought of us while you enjoyed the tropical beach!

Arvins beach

I noticed right away how dry this Chianti was, which would definately make it go well with food. Larry said it made him pucker and Steve decided that this was his absolute favorite!

93 points from WineFetch.com: A vivid garnet red color with flashes of violet fading to the rim reveals an elegant bouquet of wild berries and violets with notes of roasted coffee beans and flinty minerality. The core of fruit is plush and caressing with notes of dried strawberry, Bing cherries, pipe tobacco, leather and violets and a long, silky finish. The silky tannins are ripe and integrated into the wines forward personality. This is textbook Chianti that will continue to develop for 5-7 years. Enjoy it with anything Italian, burgers and grilled meats.

Chianti 101 from WineWeekly.com: ‘Almost all producers of Chianti Classico belong to a consortium that acts as a watchdog and ensures that high quality is preserved in the wine. Wines made by these high standards are identified by a black rooster on the neck of each bottle. (Why a rooster? That’s a whole ‘nuther story…)’

What does the Rooster signify?: What makes unique Chianti Classico compared to other Chianti wines is the unmistakable pink label with the Black Rooster seal. This particular label is the symbol of the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium, founded in 1924 to protect, promote this wine and prevent wine fraud.

Chianti Classico is a DOCG wine and shows unique peculiarities and characteristics. To be named “Classico” is not enough to be produced within the Chianti region. In fact Classico wine has to respect specific rules. Its blend is 80% for Sangiovese, red grape typical of this area, 20% for other grapes that can native grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as other international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
